What is the HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine?
The HPV vaccine, Gardasil 9, helps protect against human papillomavirus types that can cause cervical, throat, anal, and other cancers, as well as genital warts. It is most effective when given before exposure to the virus and is routinely recommended for preteens and young adults.

About the HPV (Human Papillomavirus) Vaccine
The HPV vaccine, Gardasil 9, helps protect against human papillomavirus types that can cause cervical, throat, anal, and other cancers, as well as genital warts. It is most effective when given before exposure to the virus and is routinely recommended for preteens and young adults.
Who should get this vaccine?
- Adolescents ages 9 to 14 who usually receive a 2-dose series
- Teens and young adults ages 15 to 26 who usually receive a 3-dose series
- Adults ages 27 to 45 after a shared clinical decision with a healthcare provider
- Anyone not previously vaccinated or who did not complete the series

Side effects & contraindications
Common side effects
- Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site
- Headache
- Dizziness or fainting, especially in adolescents
- Nausea
- Low-grade fever
Fainting can occur after vaccination, especially in teens. Patients are often asked to remain seated for about 15 minutes after the injection.
Rare side effects
- Severe allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis
Who should NOT get this vaccine
- Severe allergic reaction after a previous dose of HPV vaccine or to any vaccine component
- Severe allergy to yeast, since the vaccine is produced using yeast
- Pregnancy, in which case vaccination is usually delayed until after delivery
- People who are currently moderately or severely ill may need to wait until they recover

Dosing Schedule
Ages 9 to 14 usually receive 2 doses given 6 to 12 months apart. Ages 15 to 26, or those starting later, usually receive 3 doses given at 0, 1 to 2 months, and 6 months.

Vaccine consent forms and Vaccine Information Statements, or VIS, are provided before vaccination at participating pharmacy locations.
After your vaccination
Aftercare tips
- Apply a cool compress to the injection site if it feels sore
- Move your arm throughout the day to help reduce stiffness
- Stay hydrated and rest if you feel tired
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen if needed
