Who should get this vaccine?

  • All adults age 75 and older
  • Adults ages 50 to 74 who are at increased risk for severe RSV illness
  • Adults with chronic heart or lung disease, weakened immune systems, or certain other underlying conditions
  • Adults living in nursing homes or other long-term care settings may also be at higher risk

Common side effects

  • Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Muscle or joint pain

RSV vaccine side effects are usually mild to moderate and often resolve within a few days.

Rare side effects

  • Severe allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis
  • Rare serious reactions continue to be monitored through vaccine safety systems

Who should NOT get this vaccine

  • Severe allergic reaction after a previous RSV vaccine dose or to any component of the vaccine
  • People who are currently moderately or severely ill may need to wait until they recover
  • Anyone with questions about prior serious neurologic illness should discuss risks and benefits with a healthcare provider

Dosing Schedule

RSV vaccination is currently given as a single dose. Adults who have already received one RSV vaccine dose should not receive another dose at this time. Availability may vary by location.

Aftercare tips

  • Apply a cool compress to the injection site if it feels sore
  • Move your arm throughout the day to help reduce stiffness
  • Stay hydrated and rest if you feel tired
  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen if needed
