What is the Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) vaccine?
The Tdap vaccine protects against three serious bacterial diseases: tetanus (lockjaw), diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). One dose of Tdap is recommended for all adolescents and adults, followed by a Td booster every 10 years.

About the Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) Vaccine
The Tdap vaccine protects against three serious bacterial diseases: tetanus (lockjaw), diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). One dose of Tdap is recommended for all adolescents and adults, followed by a Td booster every 10 years.
Who should get this vaccine?
- Adolescents 11 to 12 years old (routine dose)
- Adults who have never received Tdap
- Pregnant women (one dose during each pregnancy, weeks 27 to 36)
- Adults needing a tetanus booster after a wound or injury
- Close contacts of newborns (cocooning strategy)

Side effects & contraindications
Common side effects
- Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site
- Fatigue and body aches
- Headache
- Low-grade fever
Soreness at the injection site is very common and may last several days. This is normal.
Rare side effects
- Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
- Severe swelling of the entire upper arm
- Guillain-Barre syndrome: very rare
Who should NOT get this vaccine
- Severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of Tdap or Td or any component
- History of encephalopathy within 7 days of a previous pertussis-containing vaccine
- People who are currently moderately or severely ill
Always inform your pharmacist of any allergies, medical conditions, or medications before receiving the Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) vaccine.
Dosing Schedule
One dose of Tdap, then a Td or Tdap booster every 10 years. Pregnant women should receive one dose during each pregnancy.

After your vaccination
Aftercare tips
- Apply a cool compress to the injection site if sore
- Move your arm throughout the day to reduce stiffness
- Stay hydrated and rest if you feel fatigued
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers (acetaminophen or ibuprofen) if needed
