Common side effects

  • Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site for the injectable vaccine
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Abdominal discomfort, nausea, or stomach upset with the oral vaccine

The oral vaccine may cause mild stomach upset. Capsules should be taken exactly as directed.

Rare side effects

  • Severe allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis

Who should NOT get this vaccine

  • Severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of typhoid vaccine or to a vaccine component
  • Immunocompromised individuals should not receive the oral live vaccine and may need the injectable option if appropriate
  • Children younger than 2 years should not receive the injectable vaccine, and children younger than 6 years should not receive the oral vaccine
  • People with a current moderate or severe illness, especially with fever, may need to wait until they recover

Always inform your pharmacist of any allergies, medical conditions, or medications before receiving the Typhoid vaccine.

Dosing Schedule

Injectable typhoid vaccine is given as 1 dose at least 2 weeks before travel. A booster is recommended every 2 years for people who remain at risk. Oral typhoid vaccine is taken as 4 capsules on alternate days and should be completed at least 1 week before travel. A booster is recommended every 5 years for people who remain at risk. Availability may vary by location.

When to get vaccinated

  • Continue using safe food and water precautions even after vaccination
